SMALL TOWN FETISH
Latrobe Regional Gallery
Solo Exhibition
25 January to 3 May 2020
Gallery 4 Celebration event: Friday 21 February 6-8pm
Local Morwell artist, Pezaloom has developed a photographic practice concerned with ghosts of lives lived. This major survey exhibition will include images from his ‘Dopa Kinesia’ series developed in response to Parkinson disease which is slowly taking control of his body.
Another major suite of works documents an abandoned home in Morwell in which remain personal and resonant artefacts of the previous residents. Poetic works such as his images of the detritus that gathers in the corners of rooms also feature in the exhibition. Pezaloom’s art is one of humanity, humour and poetry

The juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness, tenderness and fear, desire and anxiety
runs through all of Pezaloom’s work, challenging ideas of the body in art, cognitive
functionality, notions of the erotic, and systems of control. Since being diagnosed
with early-onset Parkinson’s Disease, his work in visual and sound art has mostly
been driven by an exploration of the physical and mental symptoms of his illness,
even using these symptoms as tools to create his own distinctive style of artistic
expression.
Dopa-kinesia, created with the assistance of Kim Anderson in the role of supportartist
and curator, is a series of experimental self-portraits intended to challenge
the many myths and misconceptions surrounding Parkinson’s Disease. The title
– an amalgamation of “dopamine” and “hypokinesia” – relates to one of the
major symptoms of the disease, namely the failure of certain cells in the brain to
manufacture dopamine, a substance that allows for smooth, coordinated function
of the body’s muscles and movement. Pezaloom has immersed his entire body
in approximately 160 kilograms of petroleum jelly to represent the heaviness,
slowness and restriction of movement he experiences.
This performative act was photographed in the hulking Yallourn Power Station
administration building, which now stands derelict and empty. The Latrobe
Valley where Pezaloom has always lived is the centre of the brown coal power
industry in Victoria, and the strange aesthetic of this environment provides an apt
metaphor for the dissonance occurring within his own body with the progression of
Parkinson’s Disease. Within and without, the beauty and horror exist in a symbiotic
relationship, intermingled with fear and a deep love and acceptance of the place as
an essential part of his identity.

My work is inspired by the strange aesthetic of the environment
in which I live in the Latrobe Valley, the centre of the brown coal
power industry in Victoria. The natural valley landscape is marred by
the monumental industrial forms of power stations shrouded in clouds of
mist – at once magnificent, menacing, and surreal. Since power
generation was privatized in the 1990′s, the area has existed under a
systemic cloud of socio-economic problems, and a pervading sense of
unease and anxiety exacerbated by the recent Hazelwood coalmine fire.
Built in 1922, the hulking form of the Yallourn Production Centre administrative building now stands derelict and empty. Simultaneously beautiful and ugly, it exists as the last remnant of an earlier period of optimism and industrialization. Overshadowed by the monolithic chimneys of the newer power plant nearby, after a short-lived reincarnation as a nightclub (and rumoured brothel), it now stands like an oversized headstone memorialising an era of growth and decay.

The 2014 Flanagan Art Exhibition
The Federation University Emerging Artist winner was announced as Pezaloom for his confronting image entitled "Self Portrait (Dopa-kinesia Parkinson's)". The photograph depicts Pezaloom's naked torso and head covered in petroleum jelly, and was described by judge Professor Callum Morton as a "confronting, disturbing image" which gave the viewer "an insight into the emotions of the artist following his diagnosis as a Parkinson's sufferer". Pezaloom is a Morwell-based artist.
